Steve G. Gutierrez has a blanket request for metro-area residents, and he is willing to give up his warm bed and restful nights until he gets what he wants.

Eleven days ago, the South Valley man began sleeping outside near the entrance to the Youth Development Inc. branch at the Old Armijo Elementary School on Isleta SW.

Gutierrez is not homeless. He is on a mission.

"We're trying to collect 200 blankets or more," Gutierrez, a 53-year-old YDI counselor, said in a recent interview at the former schoolhouse. "I'll be sleeping outside this building until I reach my goal. …
