History Library Receives Present

A leading New Mexico folklorist and chronicler of the penitentes religious sect has donated a portion of her research material to the Fray Angelico Chavez History Library at the Museum of New Mexico.

Anthropology Department Chairwoman at the University of New Mexico Marta Weigle said she chose the Santa Fe library for its central location, hoping a range of researchers and students would use the material.

"I think a lot of different people wind up in the history library," said Weigle, who has lived in Santa Fe since 1961 and is a partner in Ancient City Press. The publisher printed Weigle's first pamphlet in 1972 about the penitentes, a Catholic lay order that also functioned as a fraternal society in isolated northern New Mexico. …
