$900,000 Approved Toward Pinon Hills

Rio Arriba County received a $900,000 boost Friday from Congress to create a center to help drug addicts, alcoholics and both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence.

The money will partially fund the county's purchase of the former 52-bed Pinon Hills juvenile treatment facility in Velarde for use as a social-services center, including substance-abuse treatment, a battered women's shelter and welfare-to-work programs.

"This is a real leap for us," said Lauren Reichelt, the county health and human services director who lobbied for the funding. "We're extremely pleased about it. …
