NASA Job May Interest Schmitt.(New Mexico)

WASHINGTON Former astronaut Harrison "Jack" Schmitt on Monday downplayed the chance that he would become the next administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, but he said he might be interested in the job.

Schmitt, a 65-year-old former U.S. senator from New Mexico, said he has not been offered a NASA job, or even a job interview, by President-elect George W. Bush's transition team.

"I'd be more than happy to talk with (the Bush transition team) and where they are headed with space policy," Schmitt said. "I would not hesitate to chat with them."

Schmitt, a geologist, grew up in Silver City and walked on the moon as a civilian astronaut in 1974. …
