Top Army Engineer Relishes New Mission.(New Mexico)

* Demonstration projects could include habitat restoration along Rio Grande

A project to restore habitat along the Rio Grande is in the future of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the agency's new commander said Monday.

Lt. Gen. Robert B. Flowers visited New Mexico to tour the agency's projects here and meet the staff.

"Being stewards of the environment is inherent in our mission," he said in an interview. "We take that role very seriously."

Flowers took over the Corps in October. He had been commanding general of the Maneuver Support Center and Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. Flowers also has commanded an engineer company in Germany, a brigade of 10 battalions during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and the Mississippi Valley Division of the Corps. …
