City Passes Immigrant Aid Bill.(Metro & New Mexico)

Unanimous passage of a bill declaring Albuquerque an "immigrant-friendly city" sparked a celebration Monday by at least 50 people who turned out at City Hall to support the measure.

The measure will help "lift the dark cloud of fear that people live under," said Eduardo Hernandez Chavez, a University of New Mexico linguistics professor.

"These people come here to work," said Chavez, who said his parents were immigrants. "Their labor generates profits for the companies they work for. They have to take the lowest-paid jobs. They are hounded by the law simply for being here. …
