Second part of 'Norman' trilogy gives characters more depth.

"Round and Round the Garden," the second installment in Alan Ayckbourn's "The Norman Conquests," opened Saturday at the Vortex Theatre. Playwright Tom Stoppard once observed that "every exit is an entrance somewhere else." Ayckbourn's trilogy is constructed on this concept.

Each play of the trilogy takes place in a different locale. When characters leave the location of one of the plays, they enter the site of another. Each play is an independent entity but is enhanced by knowledge of the others. The strong ensemble cast that introduced "Table Manners" was again in fine form.

The audience surrounds the square platform stage on four sides, and the center feature is a stone garden bench. …
