It looks like the grand old name Camino Real will be pulled out of mothballs, relegating current road maps to the dustbin of history.

The National Hispanic Cultural Center's board supports a proposal to rename the portion of Fourth SW alongside the center. It is especially appropriate that this institution be situated on the artery that carried Spanish blood and tradition into a far frontier.

The Mayor's Office is exploring interest in extending the name change north along the redeveloping Fourth Street toward Downtown and south along Isleta Boulevard. The renaming not only re-establishes historic connections, but paves an avenue for federal and state funding. …
