Local Vendors Fear Losing Share of Sunport Business.

Some small, local operators of stores at Albuquerque International Sunport say they may be forced out of business under bidding procedures the city has adopted for 10-year leases at the airport.

Anna Muller, a business consultant representing many of the small operators, said requirements for such things as gross revenue are set so high that small businesses will find it virtually impossible to compete against national operators.

"This package is made only for the big boys," said George Cook, owner of Shop Southwest Gift-News, which operates several shops at the airport. "It's not made for local vendors. If we want to be involved, we have to be subcontractors, and even then the big operators are going to cherry-pick all the prime locations. …
