Maintain Perspective In UNM Car Incident.(Editorial Page)


Actions are needed in the wake of the vandalism of a woman's car in a fraternity parking lot at the University of New Mexico. Most are pretty apparent; some already have been taken.

The Sigma Chi social fraternity asserts the vandalism was the work of an individual member, one who has been suspended by the national organization. The national organization also has placed the local chapter on a 45-day suspension and UNM has placed the fraternity on an emergency suspension while an investigation is conducted.

Campus police should determine the identity of the responsible student and file charges of criminal damage to private property. The university also should determine whether any students violated the Student Code of Conduct and take appropriate action, be it a warning, suspension or expulsion. …
