Fouls Costly To Gallup at Sandia

After a 200-mile-plus trip to Albuquerque for just one nondistrict boys basketball game, the Clovis Wildcats must have thought their personal Daniel Lovato nightmare never was going to end Friday night at St. Pius.

Lovato scored 35 points, and twice he brought the Sartans back from the brink to tie the game on long 3-pointers.

But the visiting 'Cats finally did vanquish Lovato and the Sartans, taking a 75-71 overtime victory.

Lovato's first game-tying 3-point shot forced overtime. The second, with a minute left in OT, tied the game again at 71.

But Joey Garcia's basket with 30 seconds left in the extra period gave Clovis a 73-71 lead. Then, after the Wildcats' J.C. Pacheco drew a charge on St. Pius' Terry McDermott, the visitors sealed the win on a basket from Irshaun Pinckney with 10 seconds left.

Pinckney, among other athletic Clovis inside players, caused numerous problems for the Sartans.

Playing most of the fourth quarter and overtime with four fouls, Pinckney finished with 19 points and led the 'Cats' 35-11 dominance on the boards.
