Pinon Hills Purchase Funds Part of Bill.

Congress may soon vote on a spending bill that includes $900,000 for purchase of the Pinon Hills substance-abuse treatment facility in Velarde, according to Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M.

The 50-bed facility for juveniles closed in March 1999. The Rio Arriba County Commission wants to turn it into a one-stop social services center offering substance-abuse treatment, a battered women's shelter and welfare-to-work programs.

Bingaman's office reported in a news release that congressional budget negotiators had finalized the overall budget package that funds the departments of Education, Health and Human Services, Labor and Justice. …
