Taos Taxman Plays Scrooge.(Opinion)


The cruel coincidence of holiday season and the due date for property tax payments is crueler this year, at least for Taos homeowners. Their tax rates were supposed to go down, but instead will go up.

The reason: homeowners in record numbers protested steeply higher property valuations sent out earlier in the year. Valuations totaling almost $50 million were still in dispute at the time state tax officials set tax rates, and the disputed properties were in effect taken off the tax rolls. To cover the projected revenue shortfall, tax officials were forced to hike the rate.

Many of the higher valuations will stand. So next year, the rates will likely come down. …
