Trust Board Seems Up to Job.(Opinion)

The new Valles Caldera Trust appointees face a daunting task: figuring out how to run the new, nearly 100,000-acre National Preserve that is exempt from many of the usual federal land management rules.

Happily, the appointees selected by President Clinton last week should be up to the task. Among them, they have plenty of relevant experience and vision.

Five of the seven are New Mexico residents. Santa Fe residents William deBuys and Karen Durkovitch, for example, already are involved in private conservation efforts. A writer with several books documenting the interrelationships of people and ecology to his credit, deBuys directs the Valle Grande Grass Bank. …
