Here is a short list of some recently published books that bring attention to Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights that begins at sundown Thursday.

There are several variations on the spelling of the holiday, all of them acceptable.

*"The Ugly Menorah" by Marissa Moss. (Sunburst/Farrar, Straus & Giroux, $9.75). Rachel is keeping Grandma company because Grandpa has just died. Rachel isn't impressed with Grandma's tin-and-wood menorah her parents have a shiny silver one until she hears the story of how her grandparents struggled during the Depression; Grandpa could only afford to piece together a menorah out of found objects. …
