The International Basketball League, just beginning its second season, appears to occupy a marketing niche somewhere between the Yugo and the in-the-shell eggbeater.

It really is a shame.

In Albuquerque, at least, a pretty good product is in danger of going bad on the shelf.

The IBL's New Mexico Slam opened their home schedule Friday night with a 97-94 loss to the Las Vegas Bandits. Though the Slam doomed themselves to defeat with 35.2-percent shooting, the game was fine entertainment.

This was high-flyin', slam-dunkin', 3-point shootin', just-enough-D-to-keep-it interestin' minor-league pro hoops essentially, the same brand of fan-friendly basketball the IBL played last season in its debut. …
