Twenty-eight Albuquerque Public Schools elementary schools celebrated the Christmas season at the Cool Yule 2000 party on Saturday at the National Guard Armory.

Music, games, food and gifts kept approximately 1,500 children from economically deprived households entertained.

Santa Claus, naturally, was the star of the show, sponsored by a number of Albuquerque groups, individuals and companies.

"We went through APS councilors to identify some of the kids where there is a very high poverty rate," said Lisa Breeden, field representative for Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M. The New Mexico senator is a nationwide sponsor of Character Counts, an education group.

"I saw a lot of very, very happy kids having a really wonderful time," Breeden said. …
