Journey of Mary and Joseph Re-Enacted for 55th Year

Wearing a red and blue thermal hat that stood tall on his head, and a blue denim jacket to cut through the cold, Louie Sainz walked the south streets of Albuquerque on Saturday night enthusiastically singing, "O Come, All Ye Faithful," and other songs of the season that echoed into the chilly air in Spanish and English.

"This is an old tradition," the 46-year-old neighborhood resident explained.

A tradition, in fact, that has been carried out now for 55 years.

Sainz was one of several hundred people who gathered to take part in the annual Las Posadas de Barelas a biblical re-enactment of the search by Mary and Joseph for a room at an inn before the birth of the Jesus. …
