Secretary Considering Monument Status

Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt said Friday he is "more enthusiastic with each passing hour" about recommending that President Clinton declare the Tent Rocks formations near Cochiti Pueblo a national monument.

This was the first visit to the area for Babbitt, who along with a couple dozen aides, media representatives, pueblo and community leaders, hiked Peralta Canyon with its large tent-shaped rocks that hug the steep walls.

"If you all will be quiet, you will hear the coyotes sing in praise of creation and this arrangement," Babbitt said prior to taking the mile or so hike.

As if on cue the cry of several coyotes echoed off the canyon walls.

"Tent Rocks is extraordinary, unique and remarkable. Equally remarkable is the relationship between the Bureau of Land Management and Cochiti Pueblo," Babbitt said. …
