Man Gets 9 Years In DWI Death.

Hours after his arraignment on his eighth drunken-driving charge, Jose Vasquez drank two quarts of beer and got behind the wheel again, causing a crash in Velarde that killed the mother of two teen-age children.

Vasquez, 70, of Espanola, was sentenced Friday to nine years in state prison for that crash under the terms of a plea deal approved by state District Judge Stephen Pfeffer.

"You've sentenced this family and this family's children to a lifetime of loss," Pfeffer told Vasquez, who sat slumped in a chair in the Santa Fe courtroom, wearing handcuffs and a khaki jail uniform.

In August, Vasquez pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, two counts of DWI, leaving the scene of a deadly accident and driving with a revoked license. …
