Murder Suspect Can Select New Defender

State District Judge Richard Knowles on Friday allowed murder suspect Linda Henning's public defenders to withdraw from representing her.

Knowles also put on hold Assistant Public Defender Trienah Gorman's request to determine whether Henning is competent to stand trial for the kidnapping and murder of Girly Chew Hossencofft, 36, who disappeared in September 1999.

A hearing on whether the 47-year-old Henning is mentally competent to assist in her own defense will be held after a new attorney is selected in about two weeks, Knowles ruled.

Gorman told Knowles her office learned in late October, when the District Attorney's Office submitted an amended witness list, that a proposed state witness had been represented by her co-counsel, Assistant Public Defender Karen Schauer. …
