Kosovo refugee family reunites in Duke City after two-year separation

The Christmas tree in Vahide Gashi's Northeast Albuquerque apartment has been in place for days, but not a light or ornament adorns it.

Vahide, a Kosovo refugee, said she has been waiting for the right day to decorate her tree.

Friday was the day.

After two years in which she and five of her children were separated from her husband, Gani Gashi, and her 18-year-old son, Jeton Gashi, the family was reunited at the Albuquerque International Sunport on Friday morning.

Gani, 52, and Jeton were a little bleary-eyed from the 15-hour flight from Croatia to New Mexico, but their eyes lit up when they were greeted at Delta Gate B-10 by Vahide and the rest of the family. …
