Bluegrass string band has no use for drums.(Music)

Colorado acoustic-bluegrass quartet Yonder Mountain String Band comes to the Land of Enchantment for the first time this weekend, performing tonight at the El Rey Theatre in Albuquerque and Saturday in Arroyo Hondo at Herb's Lounge.

The group's name says it all: strings, and only strings.

"That's a traditional aspect of our band," says banjo player Dave Johnston. "We don't have a drummer, we don't ever want a drummer.

"We're all very rhythmic players, and we use our instruments to make a (danceable) 'thing' like an old-time band would do, even though what we're playing may sometimes not be construed as traditional music," Johnston says. …
