Singer/songwriter Keith Urban was raised on country. The 32-year-old Australian native remembers seeing country stars as a youngster, which left quite an impression on him.

"I remember going to see Tom T. Hall when I was about 6," he said recently. "Then weeks later my dad took us to see Johnny Cash. There was this big spotlight on him. All the smoke in the room went up through it and was causing this huge beam. I was mesmerized by it."

Two years later, Urban was winning country music talent shows and had steady work through his teen years.

He later added a country-rock tinge to his music after hearing Mark Knopfler's Dire Straits, creating the signature sound that earned him four hits Down Under. …
