The La Cueva girls basketball team watched visiting Manzano turn a blowout into a nail-biter Thursday night but managed to hold on for a 47-39 win.

Class AAAAA's top-ranked Bears (9-0) dominated the first half, leading by as many as 16 points. But the Monarchs (6-3) fought back valiantly in the second half, slicing the deficit to two points in the closing minutes.

Manzano had possession of the ball and a chance to tie with 1:15 remaining. But Fanoy Walters' short jumper missed the mark. La Cueva, which made only three second-half field goals, put the game away by hitting 6 of 8 free throws in the final minute.

"Manzano certainly had us puzzled in the second half," Bears coach Jerry Brown said. "It's a good thing we had a lead, and it's a good thing we shoot free throws well."

It was the Monarchs who appeared befuddled in the first half, particularly when La Cueva post Beky Preston got the ball. …
