New Increase Would Help Offset Fee Loss

SANTA FE The state's top highway official urged legislators Thursday to raise a tax on truck drivers to offset the likely elimination of a trucking fee.

Pete Rahn, secretary of the state Highway and Transportation Department, told the Legislative Finance Committee that he merely wants to "tweak" the state's "weight-distance tax."

The tax is based on the weight of a truck's load and the distance the truck travels in New Mexico. Revenues from the tax go to the state road fund to pay for construction projects.
