DOE Puts $20 Million Down for Start of Sandia Lab Buildings.(Metropolitan)

The Department of Energy on Thursday offered a $20 million down payment for a new complex of lab buildings at Sandia National Laboratories.

The announcement came from John Gordon, head of the Department of Energy's nuclear weapons program, during a day-long meeting at Sandia where he and others discussed the labs' latest scientific accomplishments.

Gordon said the department is ready to approve the start of engineering design work on the proposed Microsystems and Engineering Sciences Applications complex MESA.

When completed in five years, MESA would be a $400 million group of buildings housing researchers working on "micromachines" tiny devices that Gordon said might someday be used in nuclear weapons safety systems. …
