City Council Tables Proposal To Combine Family Leave for Couples.

An effort by Rio Rancho to change its policy on how much family leave married couples who work for the city can take stalled Wednesday.

The City Council voted 5-0 to "postpone indefinitely" discussion on a proposed amendment to the city's leave policy.

The effort drew opposition from the leaders of the city workers' union and the police and firefighters' union.

Federal law allows employees to take up to 12 weeks off per year for the birth or adoption of a child or to care for an ill parent. The city had wanted to cut that in half for couples who both work for the city. Rather than each partner taking 12 weeks off, the city wanted the couple to get a total of 12 weeks off. …
