Beginning around the 14th century, the European Renaissance brought a renewed interest in the arts and a zealousness for scientific inquiry.

But as historians point out, it also marked a time when people became more suspicious of nature. No longer viewed as paradisaical but as base, nature would have to be overcome if mankind was to prosper.

This sentiment was reflected in the art of the time in the artist's choice of subject matter, for example. They no longer by and large sought to depict the grandeur of God and the Holy Family but rather the greatness of ordinary mortals. …
