Deaf Students Write About Struggles.

New Mexico School for the Deaf officials say their students face unusual barriers to their literacy and many struggle with reading because of it.

Two middle school students at the state-run school shared their thoughts on the ups and downs of reading:

Cassandra Perez, an eight-grader, said she has many favorite books, including the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling and "Dead Birds Singing" by Marc Talbert.

But sometimes she still struggles.

"I am not sure what is hard about learning to read. I think I have a problem with understanding big words sometimes and it makes it hard for me to understand some things," she said in an e-mail message. …
