Taos County Plans Forum on Saturday

TAOS Taos County plans a public forum Saturday to discuss the effects of changes the state is considering on agricultural and grazing lands that could, in many cases, lead to large tax increases.

The Assessor's Office forum will be 1-4 p.m. at the county Agricultural Center on Chamisa Road and will include an explanation of the proposed changes being considered by the state Department of Taxation and Revenue and a question-and-answer session.

County Assessor Margie Abeyta said the proposal to remove the exemption that keeps so-called dry agricultural lands from being taxed at market value could affect 2,400 Taos County taxpayers and some 36,000 acres. …
