* Man convicted of sex crimes charged with not notifying county sheriff

For the first time since the so-called "Megan's Law" took effect in New Mexico five years ago, the District Attorney's Office in Santa Fe has charged a man for failing to register as a sex offender.

Sam Salazar, 35, whose home on Agua Fria Street is within walking distance of Alameda Junior High School and a few blocks from Alvord Elementary School, was convicted in Arizona in 1987 of attempted sexual molestation of a minor, Maj. Ron Madrid of the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday.

Salazar, who authorities believe had been living in Santa Fe since April, was on lifetime probation, Madrid said. …
