Growers Raise Concerns About Calculation of Rates

Ranchers and farmers who feel they were blindsided by the state Taxation and Revenue Department last month got good news this week when the agency said it would postpone agricultural property tax increases.

Tax officials said they would delay new taxes for a year because growers raised legitimate concerns about how the tax rates were being calculated.

"We didn't think the numbers they were using in the formula were the right numbers," said Paul Gutierrez, director of governmental affairs for the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau. "Particularly those on net farm income, on the return on investments. …
