Meeting To Set Up Rules May Be Before Christmas

After almost four years of failed contract negotiations, city officials and leaders of the SunTran bus drivers' union will use an outside mediator in an effort to come up with a new contract.

Robert Gutierrez, chairman of Local 1745 of the United Transportation Union, said city officials and the union have agreed the mediator will be Paul Broome, an Albuquerque resident who has been involved in labor relations for 25 years.

"We probably won't solve anything quickly," Gutierrez said. "I wish we could, but we need to at least get the process started."

Broome said his initial meeting between the two sides likely will occur before Christmas, and the first meeting probably will focus on establishing ground rules for the mediation. …
