Barelas center aims for the heart of the problem.

Much of the character of old Albuquerque is preserved in Barelas at Downtown's edge. And poverty, in the form of limited job opportunities, remains the great preserver.

Now a two-story building under construction about two blocks up Fourth Street from the new National Hispanic Cultural Center is designed to change that.

Due to open in February and still in need of money, it will be the home of the Barelas Job Opportunity Center, four retail or professional spaces and the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce.

The job center will provide life-skills and work-skills training, with instruction in resume writing, job interviews, entry-level computer keyboard and the most in-demand computer programs as well as career enhancement in the areas of technology, marketing and others. …
