Low reimbursements and other pressures are forcing some mammography centers in the United States to close or limit services, a situation likely to eventually spread to New Mexico, according to national and local radiology experts.

Michael Linver, director of women's medical imaging centers for X-Ray Associates of New Mexico, said his practice collects an average of about $50 per screening mammogram on the 30,000 patients examined each year.

The cost of film, rent, technician time, equipment and other overhead charges eat up about $60, he said.

The result is some members of the 14-physician group are wondering if they should offer mammography screening, Linver said. …
