Prescribed Burn Set For Anderson Area.

The Mountainair Ranger District is planning a prescribed burn next week for the Anderson fuelwood area in the Cibola National Forest.

The burn, planned for the week of Dec. 18, will eliminate existing piles of dead tree limbs, called slash, thereby reducing the threat of potential wildfire, said Rebecca Stoneman, fire information officer.

The Anderson fuelwood area is west of the villages of Manzano and Torreon, north of Forest Road 245 on the east side of the Manzano Mountains.

This heavily wooded ponderosa pine forest has been part of a continuing thinning project. Many small-diameter trees have already been removed, and the prescribed burn is the next step in the process of reducing the possibility of wildfire. …
