County Government Change Pushes Group Into Action.

East Mountains residents must band together if they want their concerns to be heard as leaders in Bernalillo County and Albuquerque work to form an urban-county government.

That was the message at the Dec. 6 meeting of the East Mountain Area Association, a loosely knit community advocacy group.

On Nov. 7, voters statewide approved a ballot measure giving Bernalillo County home-rule powers and allowing the county and Albuquerque to begin the process of forming a consolidated government. Among other things, home-rule powers allow the county to decide how its government will be organized.

The Bernalillo County Commission is in the process of creating a 13-member committee to draft a charter that defines and organizes an urban county government to replace the existing government. …
