Peak Plans To Open On Dec. 21.

Nobody can blame Tom Long, manager at Sandia Peak Ski Area, if the refrain from that old holiday favorite "Let It Snow" is playing over and over again in his mind.

With a 16- to 18-inch base already in place from earlier storms, Long said the Sandia ski area needs only one more minor snowfall to produce near-perfect ski conditions.

Sandia Peak had been scheduled to open Saturday, but Long said that date has been pushed back tentatively to Dec. 21.

"This is the best base we've had (for opening day) in years," Long said Tuesday. "We just need a little icing on top, and we'll be ready to go."

Long had hoped to make artificial snow to help prepare the mountain for skiing, but he said the snowmaking equipment has not been able to produce any of the fake stuff for nearly three weeks. …
