Moriarty's 13-Year Run Ends in Constitution Event.

The Moriarty High School honors civics class fell short Saturday in its attempt to earn a 14th straight trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national "We the People" Constitution competition.

The Moriarty team placed second to a team from Highland High in Albuquerque at the state-level competition in Santa Fe. The state winner earns the right to represent New Mexico in the national contest.

The state has been represented in the national finals by a team from Moriarty since the first competition in 1987. Last year, the Moriarty team won a unit award at the nationals.

"We've got a learning curve on how to deal with this," said Keith Neel, a Moriarty High teacher who has led teams to the competition for the past 10 years. …
