Firefighters, Pilots Cited For Valor.

The Los Alamos County Fire Department and two U.S. Forest Service pilots were recognized Wednesday for valor during the Cerro Grande Fire by the U.S. Department of Energy.

John Gordon, DOE's national nuclear security administrator, presented the department's awards at a ceremony in Los Alamos.

The fire began as a prescribed burn in May at Bandelier National Monument. It burst out of control and destroyed 47,000 acres and more than 400 residences.

Generally only DOE employees are eligible for the awards for valor, but the department granted an exception to recognize the department and the pilots, Capt. …
