Public To Use Baca Ranch Site

WASHINGTON President Clinton named five New Mexicans to a nine-member panel that will oversee operation of the former Baca Ranch, recently designated the Valles Caldera National Preserve, on Tuesday.

The president's appointment of the Valles Caldera Trust is a major step toward the federal government's goal of eventually opening the land for public use.

Clinton signed a bill in July allowing the government to buy the 95,000-acre Baca Ranch from private owners for $101 million. The caldera, an ancient collapsed volcano in the Jemez Mountains, is teeming with wildlife, including elk, deer, trout, mountain lions and 17 endangered plants and animals. …
