He has been happily married to his former Santa Fe High School sweetheart for 19 years.

Still, he sees his 11-year-old daughter only on weekends. And Melissa Gallegos misses her father.

"I miss my dad a lot," says Melissa, who moved from Albuquerque to Colorado with her mother and brother and left father, Robert, behind to pursue her figure-skating dreams. "I used to see him every day. I'm really close to my dad. But I came up here to train and get better. And I've been doing good so far."

With his sixth-grade daughter now enrolled in a Colorado Springs school, Robert Gallegos has stayed in Albuquerque to run his cabinet-making business, which includes a 15,000-square-foot production plant. …
