Experts Call Detention Pond Safe.

A U.S. Geologic Survey report says it is unlikely that storm runoff behind a detention dam between Rio Rancho and Corrales would contaminate ground water.

The study of whether Urban Pond 4 could spread pollution will be reviewed by the Southern Sandoval County Arroyo Flood Control Authority board at its regular meeting today.

The seven-acre pond was built to catch runoff from the 182-lot Trinity Estates subdivision bordering Corrales between Meadowlark Lane and the Thompson Fence Line north of Sara Road in Rio Rancho.

The pond has been the center of an emotional debate, including a lawsuit Corrales officials filed against the city of Rio Rancho and developers in 1997 over whether the subdivision should be built. …
