Armendariz's fight against cancer looms large in the Capital boys basketball program

When the Capital High School boys basketball team takes to the hardwood tonight against crosstown rival Santa Fe High, they will do so without the familiar face of head coach Al Armendariz.

That's because Armendariz will sit out most or all of the current season as he undergoes chemotherapy for his bout against lymphoma. In his place will be his top assistant, Ben Gomez.

"I don't want any one to call me the head coach, the interim head coach or anything else that implies I am now in Coach Al's shoes," Gomez said. "Coach Al is still the head coach, and he will be until he decides he can no longer do the job. I'm just here to keep things going until he returns. If it turns out that he can't continue, then I'll apply for the job just like anyone else."

While there is no timetable for Armendariz's return, he has said he hopes to be back as early as late January or early February. Confined mostly to his home, he did not attend the team's home opener against Pojoaque two weeks ago. …
