Five Breakouts Tops Four Northern N.M. Facilities

With five escapes since August, the Espanola Detention Center has seen more inmates flee this year than four other jails in northern New Mexico combined.

All of the inmates were eventually recaptured, but one escapee reportedly broke into a house near the city jail Thanksgiving night and stole clothes and work boots before being caught.

Another inmate charged with drunken driving kicked open the door of a holding room in October and walked out the jail's front door without guards noticing.

Last week, an inmate being treated at Espanola Hospital's emergency room briefly escaped at 1:51 a.m. Wednesday, prompting an entire shift of six Espanola police officers to be called for back-up in locating the inmate.

In August, an inmate did not return to the jail after an unescorted furlough to the dentist to have a molar removed. …
