Social Workers Help Police With Teens

Albuquerque police are making use of a new option for kids in trouble with the law social workers.

Delia Mendoza has been in touch with runaways and truant students since October, when she began working as a social worker out of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department's South Valley substation.

"It's been very positive and helpful to have a social worker in-house," Lt. Bill Reed said. "As with anything new, it takes time to get the word out, as to the services she can offer.

"If we can talk to a child who's at a crossroads and send (him) in the right direction even just that one time, then the program's beneficial. …
