Candidates for NMSO music director interact with Albuquerque High orchestra as part of their tryout

Fingers snapping and arms outstretched, guest conductor John Morris Russell addresses the violinists of the Albuquerque High School Orchestra. "Bows in the power position!" barks Russell, the associate conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. "This is a nice, brisk tempo. Are you guys up to the challenge? Let's make sure those eighth-notes have a little more oomph!"

And once again, this time briskly, the high school orchestra students play the "Fiddle Dance" by composer Percy Fletcher. Keeping the beat with his tapping foot, the student's regular orchestra teacher, Art Sheinberg, looks on as his special guest alternately criticizes and praises the young musicians. …
