Boy Gets 2 Years In Slaying.

13-Year-Old Admitted Shooting Classmate

DEMING Victor Cordova, who was 12 years old when he shot and killed a middle school classmate last year, was sentenced to two years in detention Monday, the maximum penalty for juveniles.

Silver City-based District Attorney Jim Foy committed to seeking additional one-year extensions of Cordova's sentence after his initial detention. The boy could remain in state custody until age 21 if a judge agrees.

But the sentencing Monday before Judge V. Lee Vesely of the 6th Judicial District appeared to be of no solace to the family of Cordova's victim, 13-year-old Araceli Tena. She was shot in the head Nov. 19, 1999, in the crowded lobby of Deming Middle School and died the next day. …
