M-Mountain Title Captured by Dons

Rolling to three victories in as many days, the West Las Vegas High School boys basketball team sent an early message to the rest of Class AAA by winning the M-Mountain Classic in Socorro over the weekend.

The preseason choice to finish third in the District 2AAA race, the Dons have knocked off the state's top team in Ruidoso and raced to a 5-0 start. Ranked seventh in the latest Journal Coaches' Poll, West Las Vegas claimed its latest victory in Saturday's championship game of the M-Mountain against host Socorro.

Robbie Lujan led three players in double figures in the title game as coach David Bustos' club also got 13 points from Gino Mathis and 11 from David Gonzales to pull away late. West Las Vegas trailed at halftime, 36-31, but rallied for the lead by the start of the fourth quarter.
